ARTIST|EXPAND 2024
AWARDED TO ZACH YOUNG
Paracosm Dance has awarded the 2024 ARTIST|EXPAND grant to Zach Young, funding in part his latest lighting and scenic design marvel: a self-contained stage as curved steel, integrated pixel-mapped lighting, and movement partner to any artist in any space. What a momentous project to close out his undeniably impactful work through UT Austin's Theater and Dance MFA graduate program, where he has set new standards, evolved production methods, and paved fresh paths for UT's live design.
Zach Young is a creator in many forms - with a particular passion for lighting design. His relentless curiosity drives him to explore innovative ways of integrating light into spaces, breathing life into the world around him. A collaborator at heart, Zach's lasting goal is to create extraordinary experiences that speak to the story, elevating the work of his fellow creatives. His passion for creating extends from designing and constructing scenic structures to how lights interact with the physical environment.
Curiosity is a main driving force, pushing him forward. He will forever ask the questions: How can this be done better? How can he tell a story differently? How can he most impact audiences?
His versatility includes roles as a Designer, Technical Director, and custom furniture and sign maker—each of which contributes to his ever-expanding repertoire of creative concepts.
Soon to graduate with an MFA in Live Design and Production from the University of Texas at Austin in May 2025, Zach is an eternal student, continually striving to learn and grow. He believes the more one learns, the richer the tapestry of stories one can tell, and the more dynamic the methods of storytelling can become.
